Together they built Pepi’s and an adjoining hotel called Gasthof Gramshammer into one of Vail’s most iconic destinations. Pepi died in 2019 at 87, but Sheika is still around.Pepi Gramshammer was an Austrian s...

Man accused of fatal RTD bus stabbing was released on parole despite public safety concerns, records show A Colorado parole board hearing for Vinchenzo Moscoso, the 30-year-old accused of stabbing two people to death in northwest Denver in September, shows state officials went against a parole officer’s recommendations to revoke Moscoso’s parole and allowed him to be released from jail despite concerns that he was a safety risk to the community. The state’s parole division recommended revoking Moscoso’s parole because his history of drunken driving made him a public safety risk, according to a recording of the October 2022 hearing obtained through the Colorado Open Records Act.Instead, the parole board ordered Moscoso’s parole be continued, and he was released from the Jefferson County Jail on March 29.Moscoso is accused of first-degree murder in the deaths of Fidel Sanchez-Banuelos, 51, and Judith Corcoran, 83, on Sept. 14.Moscoso boarded a Regional Transportation District bus just after 5 a.m. in the 3200 block of North Federal Boulevard and began stabbing...

49ers explain what clinching the No. 1 seed early means to them

49ers explain what clinching the No. 1 seed early means to them SANTA CLARA – Nick Bosa was a mere rookie when he first enjoyed the thrill of clinching a playoff berth, sealed by Dre Greenlaw’s dramatic goal-line tackle at Seattle in the 2019 regular-season finale. That epic win clinched the NFC’s No. 1 playoff seed. Sunday, the 49ers returned to that top spot, which offers an even better inside track to the franchise’s elusive sixth Super Bowl win.“The way it happened last time was insane. But this is pretty crazy, too,” Bosa said of the No. 1 seed. “To clinch it before the season is over is huge.”The 49ers (12-4) do not need to deploy injured players, such as Christian McCaffrey with his mild calf strain, when they host the Los Angeles Rams (9-7) before taking off next weekend’s wild-card round of the playoffs.Unlike in 2019, the NFL playoffs now only afford a bye in the wild-card round to each conference’s No. 1 seed. Coach Kyle Shanahan acknowledges the competitive advantage that comes with avoiding the first round.“Every game in the NF...

Newton: Will California voters believe Big Oil or Jane Fonda?

Newton: Will California voters believe Big Oil or Jane Fonda? When Hiram Johnson and the California Progressives adopted the referendum, ballot initiative and recall process just over a century ago, they had a fairly specific goal in mind. They sought to reserve power for the people in instances where big business, specifically the Southern Pacific Railroad, wielded corrupt influence. The reforms were meant to allow the electorate to remove the officials responsible, pass laws over their objections, or undo their acts. People over business.Yet next fall Californians will consider a referendum sponsored by big business to undo the act of the people’s elected leaders — a recurring theme in recent years. The specific matter at issue is Senate Bill 1137, a 2022 law that bans oil drilling within 3,200 feet of homes, schools, hospitals and the like. Oil companies responded by circulating petitions to challenge the legislation with a referendum, and voters will get the opportunity to decide its fate this year.“It’s an egregious attack on d...
