64-acre vegetation fire burns near US-Mexico border: Cal Fire

SAN DIEGO -- A 64-acre vegetation fire broke out in southeastern San Diego County Sunday afternoon, prompting evacuations in surrounding areas due to a continued structure threat.Around 2:40, the fire was reported near the Potrero County Park on Potrero Park Drive. The blaze had spread to about 20 acres after an hour, according to Cal Fire. By 5:20 p.m., the fire had spread to 64 acres and remains 10% contained.Evacuation warnings and orders have been put in place for the area of Potrero Valley Road, Cal Fire said. A temporary evacuation point has been set up at Steele Canyon High School -- located at 12440 Campo Road -- for those impacted.Road closures are also in place between the area of Highway 94 and Potrero Park Drive. Roy Herron, a longtime Tennessee state lawmaker and former chairperson of the state Democratic Party, died Sunday from injuries sustained in a jet ski accident. He was 69.Herron died at Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville, according to a statement from his family. (KTLA) – A California woman woke up Sunday to find a dead bear in her front yard. Monrovia resident Amy Spada said that she disregarded a loud noise she heard outside her home around 10:30 p.m. on Saturday night. “I thought maybe it was a firework, or a car accident...I didn’t think much of it,” Spada said. “A little while later, there was some police action in the condo complex, so I went out to see what was going on, and two rows over, police were saying that a bear got hit by a car on Foothill Boulevard, and it’s injured and it’s hiding behind one of the bushes close to my house.” Spada said that police told her that the bear was injured and aggravated, and that they were handling the situation. A massive landslide forced the evacuation of a dozen homes in a Los Angeles County neighborhood late Saturday night, and police, fire and utility company officials were on scene as early as 6 a.m. Sunday morning with the area completely closed off.At least 12 homes were evacuated in Rolling Hills Estates along Peartree Lane next to the canyon area, the Los Angeles County Fire Department said.
