Editor's Note: The video above shows KXAN Live's top headlines for Aug. 18, 2023LOCKHART, Texas (KXAN) — Both the southbound and northbound lanes of State Highway 130 were shut down Friday near Lockhart due to a 40-acre grass fire, according to the Lockhart Police Department. WILDFIRE TRACKER: How many acres have burned in Central Texas this year? LPD originally said U.S. Highway 183 at Colorado St. from FM 2001 to Lockhart City Limits were also shut down, but the northbound lanes and the southbound inner lane of U.S. 183/Colorado St. have since been reopened.The Texas A&M Forest Service estimates the fire is 40 acres. GALWAY, N.Y. (NEWS10) – On Thursday night, the Galway Central School District voted on a measure that would ban two books. One board member was absent, the vote resulted in a tie, now they will vote on it again on Monday at a special Board of Education meeting.The two books in question are “The 57 Bus” and “Ink Knows No Borders," both written for teens by non-fiction authors. They were part of the summer reading curriculum for some Galway Central School District students.“The 57 Bus” tells the story of a teen who was set on fire by another teen while riding a bus in Oakland, California. It’s about the intersection of race, class, gender, crime, and punishment. “Ink Knows No Borders” is a collection of poetry bringing together the experiences of teen immigrants and refugees.A spokesperson for the district said that Superintendent Brita Donovan did not want to speak with NEWS10 on camera until the board of education reaches a decision on the matter. VENICE, Ill. - To bring more grocery stores and fresh produce to food deserts in Illinois, Governor J.B. Pritzker signed new legislation Friday morning. The Aurora Police Department is facing another lawsuit alleging excessive force against a Black man, this time during a 2021 traffic stop that ended in the man being dragged out of his car, tased and arrested.Antonio Johnson, 43, was stopped on Aug. 22, 2021, for incorrectly displaying a temporary license plate, according to the complaint filed in U.S. District Court and a police statement in video footage provided by Johnson’s attorney. Johnson was “generally complying” with officers’ demands but not perfectly, the complaint states, and rather than de-escalating the situation by talking calmly to him, the officers chose to escalate. Johnson was arrested on charges of obstructing a peace officer, driving under restraint, driving under the influence and having an open alcohol container in a vehicle, court records show. San Bernardino County Chief Executive Officer Leonard X. Hernandez has resigned from his position. The county announced his resignation Friday, adding that it was effective immediately.Hernandez has held the job, which is the highest-ranking non-elected position in the county, since September 2020.In a release issued by San Bernardino County, Hernandez said he would be stepping down due to an undisclosed "urgent family health issue" that will require his full and immediate attention.Leonard X.
