Twins reliever Brock Stewart ‘to pitch in some meaningful spots’ CHICAGO — When the bullpen phone rang late in Tuesday night’s game, with the Twins and White Sox locked in a close battle, Brock Stewart wasn’t quite expecting his name to be called. But with the score tied 2-2, the Twins did indeed summon Stewart to pitch the ninth inning, a big show of faith for a veteran reliever who just a week ago hadn’t pitched in the major leagues since 2019.“I literally told myself going out, ‘This is a sweet opportunity you have in front of you so you should come out there and attack,’ ” Stewart said. His outing — his third scoreless appearance since joining the Twins — didn’t go exactly as he would have wanted: He walked three, one intentionally, but he managed to work his way out of the inning unscathed, getting the Twins to extra innings. Tuesday, he found himself in that situation in part because fellow relievers Jorge López and Griffin Jax already had been used and Jhoan Duran was down for the day. But moving forward, Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said he...

Letters: Urgency about teaching reading is good. We also need to be urgent about math

Letters: Urgency about teaching reading is good. We also need to be urgent about math Math, tooLiteracy is getting a lot of attention at the State Capitol and rightfully so. Reading proficiency has been in decline for a decade and the pandemic only made matters worse. The Minnesota House and Senate education finance bills dedicate millions to improve reading instruction. These are worthy investments that I applaud.I would ask our state lawmakers to apply that same level of urgency to helping students who are struggling with mathematics. During the pandemic, math scores fell further than reading scores. And sadly, those impacts fell disproportionately on our low income students and widened gaps between our white students and students of color and American Indian students.Minnesota has a proven program that is already working in our schools. Minnesota Math Corps is serving thousands of students statewide and is helping accelerate math growth for K-8 students below grade level. The relationships the Math Corps tutors make with students and the individualized supports th...
