Missouri governor signs bill banning gender-affirming care for transgender minors, some adults

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Transgender minors and some adults in Missouri will soon be banned from accessing puberty blockers, hormones and gender-affirming surgeries under a bill signed Wednesday by the state's Republican governor.Beginning Aug. 28, Missouri health care providers won't be able to prescribe those gender-affirming treatments for teens and children. Most adults will still have access to transgender health care under the law, but Medicaid won't cover it. Gender-affirming surgeries for inmates and prisoners will be outlawed. ST. LOUIS - Violence overnight in south St. Louis after a man is found shot and killed near a popular Soulard landmark.It all unfolded basically at South 7th Street and South Broadway right across the street from the historic Soulard Farmers Market. The crime scene was focused on a parking lot just outside the Bottom Line Sports Bar and Grill, which is located in the Kosciusko neighborhood.Homicide detectives are leading the investigation into this case.Wednesday morning, police have identified the victim as 31-year-old Jamal Perkins of south St. Louis. JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - Missouri Governor Mike Parson signed a pair of bills Wednesday morning aimed at banning gender-affirming care for minors and restricting transgender athletes to play on the team that matches the sex on their birth certificate.Missouri joins more than a dozen states in restricting or banning gender-affirming care to minors and at least 20 states in banning transgender athletes from playing on teams consistent with their gender identity.SB 49 bans access to puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, or gender-affirming surgery. It also affects Medicaid patients due to the state prohibiting any funds from covering gender-affirming care in Missouri. A head-on crash northwest of Fort Collins on U.S. 287 early Wednesday left a 57-year-old man and a 36-year-old woman dead and closed the highway for more than three hours, according to the Colorado State Patrol.A 14-year-old boy who was riding with the woman in a Dodge Rambler suffered serious injuries and was flown by helicopter to a hospital, CSP spokesman Trooper Gabriel Moltrer said. The man was driving a Subaru Outback, Moltrer said.The two vehicles crashed shortly before 6:45 a.m. near mile marker 371 north of Livermore. A person is dead after they were trapped by a fallen wall in Pacoima Wednesday morning, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.The wall's collapse was reported around 8:45 a.m., when firefighters responded to the 10500 block of Glenoaks Boulevard for reports of two people trapped.When firefighters arrived, they found that one person had gotten themselves out, but the other person remained trapped under cinder blocks.The person who self-extricated was taken to a local hospital with back pain. Footage from the scene showed multiple firefighters working to free the unidentified person, who was pronounced dead at the scene at about 10:30 a.m.No information about the victim's identity has been released. A pickup truck crashed into a homeless encampment after rolling down an embankment in the North Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles early Wednesday morning. The crash occurred around 12:15 a.m. on the southbound 405 Freeway onramp near Roscoe Boulevard. The truck drove off the ramp and rolled over, landing on an occupied homeless encampment, a California Highway Patrol spokesperson said.A person inside the encampment was injured and transported to a local hospital in unknown condition. There were also parties trapped inside the pickup truck but they were freed and uninjured, according to the spokesperson. Pedestrian-Truck Collision near Sixth Street Left 84-Year-Old Woman DeadBEAUMONT, CA (June 7, 2023) – Tuesday morning, a pedestrian accident on Highland Springs Avenue claimed the life of 84-year-old Pla Khang.The collision happened around 8:40 a.m. near the intersection of Highland Springs Avenue and Sixth Street.Based on the investigation, a big rig struck the pedestrian walking in an unknown direction on Sixth Street.
